<h2>Campus Fellow</h2><h3><a href="https://forms.gle/XWvLAbxEqm3czpLx6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">APPLY HERE</a></h3>Kat Abughazaleh’s congressional campaign seeks to hire enthusiastic and disciplined campus fellows ahead of the 2026 Democratic primary in Illinois’ Ninth Congressional District. These positions are flexible and will last until March 20, 2026, with the possibility of extension until November 6, 2026. Applications for this position close on September 10, 2025. This is a hybrid position that requires attending a university/college in or near the Ninth District and occasionally meeting in-person in our Rogers Park campaign headquarters.Kat’s campaign is about trying new things, because the same old shit isn’t working for Democrats across the country. This will be an opportunity to try out the ideas that you want to try — or to suggest the ideas that you felt couldn’t even be said out loud in traditional campaign environments. We’re also looking for people with some degree of traditional student organizing experience; tabling, organization management, and hosting regular meetings.This fellowship is open to current college students — with a preference for juniors, sophomores, and freshmen, or those with more than two semesters/three quarters completed.Pay: $1,000 monthly stipendRoles &amp; Responsibilities:<ul><li>Run your campus programming from start to end — goal-setting, planning, execution, and reporting.</li><li>Ideate, plan, host, and execute a diverse range of campus events, (tabling, dorm promotions, debates/watch parties, teach-ins, new student orientation outreach, voter registration drives, etc.).</li><li>Serve as the primary point of contact for the campaign at your university while routing all queries to the Campus Organizing Director and the Volunteer Coordinator.</li><li>Build and manage a coalition of campus organizations (student government, cultural orgs, Greek life, athletic clubs, advocacy groups, faculty allies).</li><li>Maintain a shared calendar with regular partner check-ins to solicit feedback about the campaign.</li><li>Begin a campus volunteer team and recruit, train, and manage volunteers.</li><li>Coordinate campus-focused social content and work with the campaign to submit photos, videos, and stories through appropriate channels.</li></ul>Requirements:<ul><li>Must be a currently enrolled student in or around the Ninth District at an accredited college or university.</li><li>Event organizing, student organization development, or campaign experience (even volunteering) is preferred but not required.</li><li>Experience with Google Drive, Adobe Suite, and Mobilize preferred but not required.</li><li>Ability to meet in-person at our campaign headquarters on 7016 N. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until at least June 30, 2025. There are 342,000 residences in the District — and we want to visit every single one.We’re prioritizing community needs ahead of high overhead and wasteful ad spending. We’re leaving no voter behind, whether they live at the far west end of the District, whether they haven't voted in a decade, or whether they aren’t even registered to vote yet. You and I do.I graduated from George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs in 2020 with a BA in International Affairs concentrating on Security Policy — and while I'm proud of the robust and progressive platform my campaign has, I'm not an out-of-touch policy wonk. I'm a renter. I went over a year without health insurance. My net worth is pretty much just the laptop I bought with my entire severance when I got laid off and my adorable cat, Heater. I spend my spare time knitting, playing video games with friends, and reading sci-fi.We haven't had the chance to build wealth like previous generations, but that doesn't make our lives worth any less. I’ve already gone toe-to-toe with the richest man in the world on multiple occasions. I’ve looked hundreds of billions of dollars and virtually unlimited political power in the eye and still have done what was right: holding Elon Musk accountable at every turn and calling out his innumerable lies as well as his attacks on our democracy — and that was even before he tried to take over the government.Experiences like these consistently inform my views on antitrust legislation and commitment to limiting corporate consolidation, especially when that consolidation imperils our democracy. As a key example, Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, now X, has contributed to the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, imperiling our democratic processes and truth itself. Billionaires cannot be allowed to use their wealth to consolidate control of information networks to further enrich themselves and convert their immense wealth into political power. These power grabs aren’t just about billionaires maximizing their own power, it’s also about actively disenfranchising people without the same financial resources. Profits, whether those of billionaires or other shareholders, should never come at the expense of democracy, peace, or pluralism. As just one example, Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter has led to a substantial increase in far-right content on the platform, including neo-Nazism and antisemitic conspiracy theories.To prevent the conversion of immense wealth into immense political power, I support a constitutional amendment overturning the disastrous Citizens United ruling and clarifying that money and speech are not the same under the law.

Corporate Consolidation

It’s time we fight for real family values, not the fake "family values" that the far-right uses as a smokescreen for homophobia and misogyny. We need compassionate and comprehensive support for all. Every family and individual deserves to thrive, which is why we must 1) implement a substantial child tax credit, 2) guarantee at least a year of paid parental leave, and 3) provide a monthly income and Social Security credits to stay-at-home parents.One of the biggest legislative successes of this century was reducing child poverty by almost 50% with the passage of an expanded child tax credit, which Congress (including several Democrats) then let expire, plunging millions of kids into poverty. We must bring back the expanded child tax credit but that alone isn't enough. No person, especially a child, should live in poverty and the federal government must take as many steps as possible to lift people out of poverty and guarantee our basic needs.Raising children is a form of labor and deserves to be compensated as such. I support federal implementation of programs to provide stay-at-home parents with a monthly stipend of at least $3,000, adjusted based on the number of parents and children in the household. Additionally, under my plan parents receiving these stipends would be able to use this income toward acquiring Social Security credits, a key step to guaranteeing a financially secure retirement.In 2025, having and raising a child in America is a radical and courageous act. We can, and should, make it easier for Americans to create the family they want.

My commitment to overcoming authoritarianism doesn't stop at American borders. The rise of right-wing leaders with authoritarian tendencies is not simply an American phenomenon. Global peace means not bowing down to authoritarian leaders like Vladimir Putin or Viktor Orbán, as Donald Trump and his cronies have done. Instead, we must support democratic movements worldwide while still avoiding unnecessary military intervention which historically worsens outcomes on the ground and hurts American interests.It’s also of incredible importance that members of Congress speak out against human rights abuses across the world that too often are overlooked. In Congress, I will always uplift the voices of activists fighting for peace and democracy worldwide. I will also use my platform and powers as a member of Congress to call for the United States to rejoin the Paris Climate Accords, recognize the International Criminal Court, and rejoin the World Health Organization.Putin’s war in Ukraine presents one of the most brazen instances of an illegal and immoral invasion of one country by another since World War II. The United States must exert significant diplomatic pressure on Russia and its allies to end the war and recognize full Ukrainian sovereignty over its rightful territory, including Crimea which Russia illegally annexed in 2014. Hopefully this will be accomplished before I enter Congress but if the war persists, I will support additional humanitarian and military assistance to Ukraine.As with regard to Taiwan, the United States must continue to support Taiwan in the face of increasing Chinese aggression and attempts to undermine Taiwan’s internationally recognized status as a state of its own.For decades, American foreign policy has recklessly resulted in mass death and displacement, dehumanization, and seemingly endless wars like the ones in Iraq and Afghanistan. We cannot allow taxpayer funds to go to war crimes, whether those crimes are committed by American soldiers, contractors, or our allies. Countries and militaries that receive financial assistance and weapons from the United States must abide by the simple principle that they must abide by international law if they want to continue receiving American aid. Otherwise, Congress and the State Department must work to ensure that weapons recipients are investigated for their conduct and military aid is rescinded, as per the Leahy amendments to the Arms Export Control Act and other related legislation.Trump and Elon Musk's dismantling of critical USAID programs and other foreign assistance threaten millions and must be immediately restored. Trump's funding cuts to one HIV prevention program alone have already caused <a href="https://pepfar.impactcounter.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">an estimated 65,000 deaths and counting</a> and undermine American global leadership on human rights and basic morality. American humanitarian programs literally save lives and create opportunities for millions of people worldwide.&nbsp;My foreign policy centers people, not the governments or groups claiming to represent them. In that spirit, I believe in holding our allies accountable, even when it's uncomfortable or inconvenient. For too long, the United States has let allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia commit egregious acts with American taxpayer-funded weapons. I am a proud Palestinian-American, but people of all backgrounds and ethnicities should be disturbed by our government's complicity in Israel's 58-year-long illegal occupation of the West Bank and the ongoing attacks on Gaza, which have killed tens of thousands of civilians, including infants and children. I have called and continue to call for a comprehensive bilateral ceasefire between Israel and Hamas which results in the restoration of humanitarian aid to Gaza, the release of hostages held in Gaza, and a total Israeli military withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. It is imperative that we work with our allies to set the stage for lasting peace and reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians.Additionally, the United States must recognize the State of Palestine. It is not enough to end this war: We must help rebuild Gaza and create a place at the table for Palestinian people. Peace in the region is impossible when a population is subjected to statelessness, restriction of rights and movement, and systematic dehumanization. By recognizing Palestinian statehood, both Israelis and Palestinians can more effectively navigate negotiations for a lasting peace that protects all people in the region.In a time of global uncertainty, we must also strengthen our relationships with allies closer to home, reaffirming our friendly relations with our closest neighbors. Donald Trump's threats to annex or invade Canada are completely unacceptable and threaten the rules-based order that American diplomats and elected leaders should be promoting. Likewise, buying Greenland, annexing the Panama Canal, and violating any state’s sovereignty must be completely off the table.

Humane Foreign Policy

Our children and communities deserve to exist without fear of gun violence. As a member of the "school shooting generation," I know too well the anxieties caused by active shooter drills, lockdowns, and the very real threat of gun violence in the classroom.That’s why we must implement a federal assault weapons ban modeled after Illinois' assault weapons ban, enact comprehensive universal background checks, require waiting periods, institute mandatory gun safety training, close gun show and ghost gun loopholes, and prioritize victims of gun violence above all else.We must reject dangerous right-wing "solutions" to this problem, like arming teachers or building prison-like schools in the name of security. We must address the root of the problem, which is guns themselves.

Gun Violence

This is pretty easy for me: Abortion access is essential to healthcare, plain and simple. That's why — and I'm sure Sean Hannity will clutch his pearls at this — I refuse to endorse any term restrictions.Third trimester abortions are exceedingly rare and reserved for the most severe possible pregnancy complications. Even with exception carve-outs, the only thing these restrictions do is force dying patients and doctors to jump through legal hoops to get and provide basic medical care. Additionally, these restrictions often carry hefty penalties for doctors and nurses, which make them less likely to treat pregnancy complications, as we've seen in states with abortion bans. It's also essential that we protect our right to birth control and the morning-after pill through as many legal avenues as possible.Finally, the United States has an unprecedented maternal mortality rate compared to our peers, and it’s even higher in poor, Black, and brown communities. That’s why we must reinvest exponentially in maternal health research and care as well as reinstate any research grants and medical funding cut by the Trump administration.

This means actually fighting, not just writing letters or wearing matching outfits, like many Democrats did at Trump's joint address to Congress.I refuse to stand by as Trump and Bovino attack my constituents. As your Congresswoman, I will take my experience fighting the far-right to Capitol Hill and beyond. Anti Authoritarianism

Anti-racism must be an explicit federal policy priority because racial inequality in the United States is not accidental or isolated. It is the direct result of decades of deliberate decisions that entrenched white supremacy into our laws, institutions, and economic systems.&nbsp; From redlining that stripped generations of Black families of wealth, to mass incarceration policies that criminalized entire communities, to workplace discrimination that suppresses wages and opportunity, these inequities compound across a lifetime. They show up in unequal educational attainment, shorter life expectancy, and devastating health disparities, including disproportionately high maternal mortality rates for Black women regardless of income or education.&nbsp; Addressing these injustices requires more than rhetoric. It demands federal action that confronts structural racism head-on, overhauls discriminatory systems, invests in communities that have been systematically harmed, and ensures that policy is designed to produce equitable outcomes, not just equal intent. Anti-racism in policy is about repairing harm, expanding opportunity, and building a democracy that actually works for everyone.

Structural Racism

The LGBTQ+ community has historically been forced to be canaries in the proto-fascist coal mine and this time is no different. That's why even though Republicans are trying their best to villainize queer (particularly trans) people, we're not going to fall for it. Some Democrats might be happy to throw trans people under the bus for an interview with Steve Bannon, but I'm not. I refuse to meet this GOP smear campaign with anything except unflinching solidarity with the queer community. So here's what we should actually be doing:<ul><li>Ensure legal protections for the queer community. This means passing the Equality Act, amending the Civil Rights Act to include gender and sexual orientation, and creating federal legislation that specifically protects gender affirming care for all trans Americans because individual states should not be able to ban life-saving medical care.</li><li>Protect the transgender community. The right is coming after trans people for a reason — because they are usually the easiest targets for a fledgling fascist regime to throw under the bus. I can't stress this enough: This has happened before — in early Nazi Germany. That's why we must take extra steps to stand in solidarity with the trans community and help them when times get tough. You're not going to hear me fall for right-wing propaganda about trans kids and bemoan how woke pronouns are (or whatever bullshit they're pushing that week). That's because trans people are people, but also because I talk to trans individuals in the community almost every single day. As your Congresswoman, I will always value the lived experience of constituents over whatever hate campaign Fox News is presently spewing. Oh, and we're obviously going to reverse all of Trump's horrendous transphobic executive orders.</li><li>More medical support and research. The LGBTQ+ community is critically underserved in the medical field. That's why we need to restore and increase any federal funding into LGBTQ+ health that Trump cut. Oh, and let's make PrEP easily available, affordable, and known to all Americans, gay and straight.</li></ul>

LGBTQ+ Protections

We should all agree Congress is broken. Our current system functions too much on greed, rewards stagnation, and disincentivizes change. That's why we need a serious overhaul of our electoral system. Conversations about democratic reforms like multi-member districts and ranked-choice voting are crucial to restoring trust in our government.First and foremost, we must overturn the Supreme Court's egregious Citizens United ruling which has allowed virtually unlimited sums of money to flow into American elections. Money is not speech — period.I fully support a national conversation about implementing term limits for Members of Congress and I pledge to serve no more than five terms in the House of Representatives if I'm elected.The federal judiciary is also deeply broken. Supreme Court Justices are partying with billionaires and openly taking bribes as they rule in ways that hurt millions of Americans. We need a binding code of ethics for the Supreme Court and all federal judges and we need Congress to rigorously enforce it. To depoliticize the Supreme Court, we must also require a two-thirds Senate majority to confirm Justices, expand the Court to 15 seats, and implement 18-year term limits for Supreme Court Justices with appointments spread out evenly and fairly between presidential terms.Elected officials serve their constituents, not the other way around. Likewise, voters should choose their Representatives, not the other way around. Gerrymandering is one of the key reasons why many Americans feel that their vote doesn't count — and they're often right! In deep blue or red districts, an individual's vote often doesn't have the same effect as it would elsewhere. I support federal action to mandate nonpartisan redistricting commissions to draw congressional districts fairly and logically.Over the past decade-and-a-half the Supreme Court has gutted the Voting Rights Act piece-by-piece. Despite sometimes offering voting rights advocates minor concessions, like the creation of <a href="https://www.scotusblog.com/2023/09/court-denies-alabamas-request-to-use-voting-map-with-only-one-majority-black-district/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">a majority-Black district</a> in Alabama, the Court has eaten away at core principles of our democracy. Congress must take action, by passing <a href="https://www.brennancenter.org/freedom-vote-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">the Freedom to Vote Act</a> and by depoliticizing the Court itself.

Democratic Reform

The richest in our nation are accruing wealth at alarming rates and using their wealth to subvert our legal system and, in many cases, democracy itself. Understanding this reality and acknowledging that it must change, I strongly support a cost-of-living tax exemption, robust anti-trust legislation, and a fairer tax code overall.Additionally, she has emphasized the urgency of reinvesting in the federal agencies Trump has attacked in proposed and actual spending cuts — agencies responsible for data collection, synthesis, and analysis, particularly the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In order to fairly implement a cost-of-living tax adjustment, the cost of living must be accurately assessed on an annual basis, and the Bureau is key in that adjustment. Maintaining the Consumer Price Index’s integrity will be one of Kat’s main economic priorities while in Congress and she will continue to strongly advocate against Trump’s federal cuts while on the campaign trail. A Fairer Tax CodeKat supports further overhaul of the tax code to ensure high earners and wealth accumulators don’t have enough money to disproportionately influence our democracy and economy. Kat supports a modest wealth tax, similar to what Sen. Elizabeth Warren has proposed, but would also go further by supporting legislation to tax all income over $1,000,000 at the same rate. It is incomprehensible that earned income, capital gains, and other forms of income are not already taxed at the same rate, especially for high-earners. Additionally, Kat believes the U.S. should explore amending the tax code to include real income (like price increases of unsold stocks) for earners above a certain level of wealth. Rejecting Billionaire Influence and Corporate ConsolidationA candidate’s platform isn’t just about what they support; it also has to be about what they oppose. Kat is strident in her opposition to tax cuts for the rich and powerful that enable them to grow both their wealth and influence at an exponential rate, threatening our democracy and economic stability. Kat has never accepted contributions from billionaires or venture capital firms, unlike her main opponent in this election. Instead, her campaign is powered by tens of thousands of grassroots donors contributing an average of just $32.Kat has already gone toe to toe with the richest man in the world on multiple occasions. I am unflinching in my opposition to tax cuts for the rich and powerful that enable them to grow both their wealth and influence at an exponential rate, threatening our democracy and economic stability. Fairer Taxes

As a proud Palestinian-American, I have always passionately supported the dream of an Palestinian self-determination free from occupation and oppression. For that to occur, Israel must end its genocidal campaign in Gaza and the illegal occupation of the West Bank. Under the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Palestinian people deserve self-determination and full recognition by the United Nations as an equal party to the peace process. If elected, I will strongly push for the United States to drop all efforts to oppose this, and work to have the U.S. establish bilateral relations with a sovereign and independent State of Palestine.Ending the Genocide in Gaza&nbsp; <ul><li>This genocide needs to end now, and all hostages, living and dead must be returned to their families.&nbsp;</li><li>There is no acceptable scenario that envisions a permanent Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip, or the West Bank.</li><li>An unlimited surge of aid, including medical supplies and food, should be immediately allowed in and distributed to all in need.</li><li>There is no acceptable scenario that leaves Hamas in charge of the Gaza Strip.</li><li>Any attempt to displace the people of Palestine from their homes is a war crime under international law, and Kat believes that it is impossible to be a good ally to a nation practising ethnic cleansing.</li><li>Upon the cessation of hostilities, Kat proposes a formal United Nations Peacekeeping mission, similar to that undertaken during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, to maintain a formal, militarized buffer zone between Israel and Palestine. If elected, Kat will push the United States to commit troops to the peacekeeping mission, and hopes that other nations that have been historical contributors to UN peacekeeping efforts, such as India and China, will participate as well.</li><li>Kat also believes that upon the cessation of hostilities, the United Nations should be allowed to conduct an unrestricted investigation into war crimes committed by both sides during the conflict, and that those responsible for atrocities be prosecuted in the International Criminal Court, as is consistent with international law.</li></ul> Full International Recognition of Palestine and its Sovereign Territory <ul><li>Kat firmly believes that both the Israeli and Palestinian people deserve to be on equal footing, and that means having the United States formally recognize the State of Palestine as sovereign and independent, and dropping our opposition at the United Nations to recognition by international organizations.</li><li>Part of being a responsible member of the international community is having an elected government. Kat proposes that the United Nations prepare and administer new, democratic, and fair elections for the Palestinian people, in order to capacity-build and strengthen the mandate of the new Palestinian government.</li><li>The United States must immediately accredit an ambassador from the State of Palestine, and send a corresponding Ambassador to Ramallah.&nbsp;</li><li>The United States must insist that Israel fully withdraw from the Occupied Territories and remove all settlements - this includes East Jerusalem, which is the chosen capital of the Palestinian State. </li></ul>Capacity-Building and Permanent Aid <ul><li>The State Department must work with the National Democratic Institute, the National Endowment for Democracy, and other foreign capacity-building entities to aid in the reconstruction of Palestine’s civic institutions, in partnership with the United Nations.</li><li>Kat is proposing that the U.S. Treasury Department, the U.S. Commerce Department, the Export-Import Bank of the U.S., the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, and other federal departments and agencies immediately make available to the State of Palestine 100 billion dollars in aid, portions of which can be distributed as a loan, for the reconstruction of Gaza’s infrastructure.</li><li>In line with the terms of a ceasefire mediated and enforced by the United Nations, the Department of Defense must deploy to Israel and begin construction on a proper de-militarized zone between the two nations, in line with international law.&nbsp;</li><li>The United States must insist that if Israel is unable or unwilling to accept a right of return for all families displaced by the Nakba, that Israel must provide equitable compensation for land and property seized under the terms of eminent domain. </li></ul>An International Jerusalem and the Right to Worship <ul><li>Kat believes that in line with international law and the desire of the United Nations, that Jerusalem, both West and East, must be a place where all are welcomed. Jews, Christians, Muslims, and people of all faith and none must be allowed to worship without fear of persecution, and that includes the Palestinians.</li><li>Kat proposes that the United Nations, in cooperation with the aforementioned peacekeeping operation, should deploy international troops to secure sites of worship and neutral corridors, so that any and all may traverse the city freely.&nbsp;</li><li>Kat believes that Palestinians must have the right to travel in Israel and vice-versa - for far too long, each has shut the other out, increasing radicalization in both populations. My plan for reinvigorating American education has five main prongs:<ul><li>Public Dollars for Public Schools: Tax dollars should be reserved for public education. Conservatives like to tout "school choice" over public schools, but ignore the myriad problems associated with taxpayer-funded charter schools like their propensity for fraud and mismanagement, history of discrimination, and diversion of tax dollars from the public school system. If we want to improve our education system, we need to actually invest in it, not siphon tax dollars from the schools that already exist in our communities.</li><li>Universal Pre-K: Studies show preschool attendance greatly improves academic and personal outcomes for children, from better math and literacy skills to a higher likelihood of graduating high school and college. Every child deserves that type of investment in their future, regardless of their family's financial future. By establishing universal pre-K nationwide, we can ensure a better future for the next generation and give parents one less thing to worry about.</li><li>Teachers Deserve More: Teachers are criminally under-appreciated and, even worse, underpaid. We need a federal minimum yearly salary of $60,000 for every public school teacher. But it's not just their paychecks. The right has been using teachers and schools as a culture war cudgel for years. From violent school board meetings to doxing teachers to bomb threats called into schools, teachers deserve more legal protections as they try to educate our children. Violence and threats against school employees should carry a higher penalty than our current federal laws dictate.</li><li>Affordable and Accessible Education: This one is pretty simple. We should cancel all student debt, make public college and trade school free for all, and adequately fund public colleges and universities.</li><li>University Protections: It's not just our K-12 schools that are under fire: Trump is holding universities hostage, both the institutions at large and their individual students. He's not only withholding funds from universities for not adhering to his MAGA agenda but attacking individuals as well, siccing ICE on campuses and arresting students like <a href="https://www.amnesty.org/en/petition/release-mahmoud-khalil/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mahmoud Khalil</a> for exercising their right to free speech. Universities are the nexus for innovation, social movements, and diversity of thought. If we do not ensure their very ability to function and if we fail to defend students' most basic rights, we risk losing entire generations of changemakers, entrepreneurs, and innovators.</li></ul>

Education

The United States is the richest country in the world and yet most Americans can't even afford a $1,000 emergency expense. We have the most billionaires of any country but also the most medical bankruptcies. And while prices have increased by about 50% in the last 15 years, the federal minimum wage has stayed stagnant at a mere $7.25.This is nonsense. We deserve better.You should be able to comfortably afford housing, groceries, and healthcare each month with plenty of money left over. There's no reason you should have to take an Uber to the hospital to avoid an ambulance bill while Elon Musk collects a $1 trillion paycheck. Our existence isn't merely a means of profit for the richest people in society. These ideas shouldn't be controversial and are at the very core of my campaign. We're often told that it's a lot more complicated than you think, but it doesn't have to be.We need more people in Congress who see basic existence as a black-or-white issue. Taxing billionaires and corporations is not some woke crusade against merit. It's simply making them pay their fair share like the rest of us do. It's time to ditch indecision and greed so we can demand what the working class deserves: a life lived in pursuit of happiness, rather than constant fear of poverty.We can fund crucial government programs and subsidize nonprofits through government grants by implementing a modest 2% wealth tax on Americans with net worths over $50 million. We can raise the minimum wage to $25 per hour with increases adjusted for inflation. We can guarantee paid family and medical leave, universal childcare, and so much more. Existence is a right, not a privilege and we can't let anyone tell us otherwise.

There is no reason you shouldn't be able to afford housing, groceries, and healthcare with some money left over. In fact, that should be the bare minimum.

Basic Existence

The United States has always been a country of immigrants: I'm the daughter of one. I vehemently oppose Donald Trump's insistence on vilifying immigrants and criminalizing their very existence. Immigration is not just about the economy, it's about basic human rights and dignity. All people deserve to be able to come to a country where they are free from persecution and strife and we must create a country that reflects that ideal.I want to be as clear as humanly possible: NO mass deportations, NO internment camps for immigrants, and NO backtracking on the best part of the American Experiment.I support an immediate pathway to citizenship for DREAMers and other undocumented immigrants while also making legal immigration more accessible and convenient. Visa wait times and border quotas are in direct contrast with the American Dream that we were promised — and which we promised the rest of the world.We often hear immigration phrased as a "migrant crisis" when in fact most people coming to the United States from abroad are not simply itinerant "migrants" but in fact refugees fleeing poverty, persecution, and political turmoil in their home countries. As your Congresswoman, I will introduce legislation to remove all caps on refugee resettlement in the United States and welcome in as many refugees as possible, as well as increase funding to support the communities they're in.

Immigration

All across America, the housing crisis is crushing middle class and poor Americans, driving them deeper into debt, and making homeownership unattainable for younger generations.&nbsp;The median first-time homebuyer age in America is now forty years old — that’s shameful, and an affront to the American Dream. The National Association of Realtors additionally projects that the roughly ten-year spike in the average age of first-time home buyers results in about $150,000 in lost equity over that gap. That makes it harder for homeowners to move, repair, and remodel their homes, and their “starter” home — typically small and inadequate to raise a family — becomes their home for life. This all contributes to declining purchasing power in each succeeding generation, resulting in a nation of renters without as much economic independence as our parents and grandparents.&nbsp; I have been a renter my entire adult life and the prospect of home ownership seems to always be further and further away for my generation.&nbsp;Many of us accepted long ago that we would probably only ever own the homes we inherit from our parents, if we’re lucky enough to have parents who are homeowners. But as my generation’s acceptance that we’ll be renters for life grows, so too has my desire to radically rethink the way the housing market operates in the United States. Here in the Ninth District, we also suffer from an affordable housing shortage.&nbsp;Our district includes both the northeastern neighborhoods of Chicago, like Rogers Park and Uptown, and stretches as far northwest as Crystal Lake. It includes both urban and suburban housing, from single-family homes to high-rise apartments. There is a large unhoused population, which is severely harmed each year by glacial temperatures along Lake Michigan in the winter, and despite the best efforts of the state and city, that population grows each year. The average monthly rent for a one bedroom apartment in our district (within Chicago proper) is $1,462, a nearly 7% increase over last year’s average. We also face a supply shortage of housing overall in Illinois.&nbsp;I believe that the primary hurdles facing the construction of new housing units in Illinois are varied, and not identical to those faced by communities around the U.S. The usual issues of zoning, permitting, NIMBYism, purely luxury development, and private equity that are found nationwide are present in Illinois, as are low permitting allowances, high fees and taxes, and a kafkaesque bureaucracy that makes it tough to actually complete projects. Then, once units actually do get built, they end up being sold to the wealthy, and are unaffordable. Interest rates are far too high. By the end of a typical 30-year mortgage, the majority of the money spent by homeowners simply goes to the lender. Interest rates need to come down, supply needs to go up, and tenants deserve the ability to form tenants’ unions. We must find unique, new ways of addressing Illinois’ housing needs that go beyond the platitudes offered by Washington politicians. Housing is often regarded as an exclusively local issue, but there are clear options for Congress to pursue.&nbsp;If elected to Congress, I would immediately co-sponsor the Homes for All Act, which will invest over $800 billion to build over eight million public housing units across the country. I will also continue to encourage national conversations about creative solutions to tackle the housing crisis, like vacancy taxes and passing a constitutional amendment guaranteeing a right to housing. I would like to revive the Depression-era Works Project Administration (WPA), and mandate a truly national effort towards building both infrastructure and housing. I would like to introduce legislation mandating that the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) assist with the infrastructure development necessary for these affordable housing units to be built, perhaps going so far as to have them lead those efforts. Finally, I would like to have the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in addition to the current grants, furnished with the budgetary resources to do mass-financing of the construction of affordable housing units — not just a block grant that cities can use for “community development.” The national housing crisis is real — we must act accordingly.

Housing

The climate crisis is an existential threat and the Trump administration's subservience to Big Oil will only accelerate the planet's warming. We need urgent action which is why I endorse the Green New Deal, including the creation of a Civilian Climate Corps to create millions of good-paying jobs that will ensure a speedy and sustainable transition to renewable energy across the board.Despite what the right may have told you, the Green New Deal is not some woke scam to ban beef farming or take away your old Corvette. It's a plan for revitalization, not just for the climate but for our economy, our country and our planet as a whole: clean water, clean air, clean energy, more green space, and millions of jobs, just to name a few of the benefits.But climate action isn't just about planning for a better future because, unfortunately, our world is being hit with unprecedented disasters right now. That's why we must bolster federal disaster aid including increased funding for FEMA. Any cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association by Trump must be reversed, and more research into climate, weather, and environmental science should be funded by the federal government.Climate change is also a racial and economic justice issue. Too often, the people at the frontlines of this emerging crisis are part of impoverished or marginalized communities. This isn't an abstraction or some woke nonsense: think of the Dakota Access Pipeline plowing through sacred Native American land or "Cancer Alley" in Louisiana disproportionately affecting poor and Black people. A proactive response to the climate crisis requires addressing these disparities head-on and taking lessons learned by these communities to a national and global scale.

Climate Change

Every American deserves healthcare regardless of whether they have a job. That’s why we need a universal single-payer healthcare system — with an opt-out if you’re a private insurance super-fan… for some reason.Basically what this means is that your tax dollars would be used for your healthcare. Despite conservative talking points, both you and your employer are paying far more, in terms of both premiums and deductibles, than people in countries with universal healthcare, and the outcomes are somehow worse! That's why I’m going to offer actual solutions to the problems we’re facing:<ul><li>Universal Healthcare: A system where your tax dollars pay for the healthcare that you want and need. No more deductibles, no more “that’s not covered under your plan,” no more “out of network providers,” and no more insurance agents trying to get you the least possible care for the most possible money. Just you and your doctor in the room. Nowhere in the world do these systems cost more than what you’re paying now for your deductibles, copays, and the cost of leaving important health issues unattended, so it won’t cost more in the United States either. With single-payer, you can expect a significantly smaller percentage of your income to go to your healthcare, with better outcomes, and more care.</li><li>All-Inclusive: That means dental, because your teeth are not luxury bones. Eye care, because you shouldn’t have to stretch those disposable one-day contacts over three days. Preventative and mental healthcare will also be included because they involve your health. Your yearly check-up, comprehensive health screenings, blood tests — all of it. You need a smart healthcare system that gathers the data it needs to help you stay healthy and live a long life, not a healthcare system run by AI agents that don’t understand context, or their billionaire investors. Those guys aren’t your doctors or healthcare providers.</li><li>Drug Price Negotiation: Drug companies have extorted us for too long. They’ve raked in profits hand over fist, and while we all need access to the drugs that keep us healthy and alive, we shouldn’t be questioning whether to pay for our prescriptions or our other essential living costs.</li><li>Rural Support: Rural America has long been impacted by a lack of access to both healthcare providers and pharmacies. This means a lot more preventable illnesses and preventable deaths. That's why I will introduce legislation to establish training programs that will pay medical school tuition for doctors who will work in underserved areas, as well as fund assistance programs to keep hospitals in those areas open so they can focus on what really matters: helping patients.</li><li>Innovation: While Trump and his Republican Party defund essential research at the National Institute of Health, deregulate the pharmaceutical industry, and let the supplements industry take over healthcare, I would rather propose real solutions: let’s help people connect to new trials if they need access to new treatments, especially for life-threatening illnesses. If there’s a chance we can save lives and improve the future of healthcare for all Americans, then you can be sure that we will.</li></ul>

Healthcare

Social Security is the backbone of this nation and yet Donald Trump is trying to destroy it. Like everything Trump does, this is a con, one that will ruin the lives of the nearly 69 million Americans who rely on Social Security. Almost a fifth of our country depends on Social Security (which they paid into) to survive. Any cuts, much less full dismantlement, are unacceptable. That's why Democrats need to do everything in their power to protect Social Security, through all legislative avenues and public pressure. It's not enough to express disapproval. We need Democratic leaders to call for a general strike if Social Security is cut — and I will be the first to do so.But Social Security doesn't just need protection, it needs expansion. That's why, as your Congresswoman, I will introduce legislation that extends Social Security's solvency for the next 100 years, increase its payouts, and ensure it is updated for the cost of living, annually. Additionally, stay-at-home parents deserve the same payout as their partner, regardless of marital status. Raising kids is a form of labor and stay-at-home parents should earn stipends and Social Security credits.Social Security affects all of us: retired Americans, caregivers, anyone who plans to live past 61, or anyone who knows anyone on Social Security (we all do!). It's time to treat this crucial program with the importance it deserves.

Republican presidents like George Bush and Donald Trump have wanted to send young Americans abroad to risk their lives in wars we shouldn't be involved in in the first place only to welcome them home with minimal support. Now Trump and his administration have turned minimal support to no support, slashing veterans' benefits, including healthcare. Veterans deserve better.It should not be controversial to say that when our service members come home they should receive exemplary benefits and healthcare. That's why Congress needs to not only restore any Trump cuts to the VA but also expand them, particularly when it comes to healthcare and assisted living.Veterans also make up one of the largest demographics in our federal workforce which means Trump's cuts to the federal budget have disproportionately (and illegally!) put veterans out of a job. These positions need to be reinstated now, with any missed pay or benefits paid back in full.

My commitment to overcoming authoritarianism doesn't stop at American borders. The rise of right-wing leaders with authoritarian tendencies is not simply an American phenomenon. Global peace means not bowing down to authoritarian leaders like Vladimir Putin or Viktor Orbán, as Donald Trump and his cronies have done. Instead, we must support democratic movements worldwide while still avoiding unnecessary military intervention which historically worsens outcomes on the ground and hurts American interests.It’s also of incredible importance that members of Congress speak out against human rights abuses across the world that too often are overlooked. I will stand firmly against&nbsp;In Congress, I will always uplift the voices of activists fighting for peace and democracy worldwide. I will also use my platform and powers as a member of Congress to call for the United States to rejoin the Paris Climate Accords, recognize the International Criminal Court, and rejoin the World Health Organization.Putin’s war in Ukraine presents one of the most brazen instances of an illegal and immoral invasion of one country by another since World War II. The United States must exert significant diplomatic pressure on Russia and its allies to end the war and recognize full Ukrainian sovereignty over its rightful territory, including Crimea which Russia illegally annexed in 2014. Hopefully this will be accomplished before I enter Congress but if the war persists, I will support additional humanitarian and military assistance to Ukraine.As with regards to Ukraine, the United States must continue to support Taiwanese sovereignty and military capacity in the face of increasing Chinese aggression and attempts to undermine Taiwan’s internationally recognized status as a sovereign state.For decades, American foreign policy has recklessly resulted in mass death and displacement, dehumanization, and seemingly endless wars like the ones in Iraq and Afghanistan. We cannot allow taxpayer funds to go to war crimes, whether those crimes are committed by American soldiers, contractors, or our allies. Countries and militaries that receive financial assistance and weapons from the United States must abide by the simple principle that they must abide by international law if they want to continue receiving American aid. Otherwise, Congress and the State Department must work to ensure that weapons recipients are investigated for their conduct and military aid is rescinded, as per the Leahy amendments to the Arms Export Control Act and other related legislation.Trump and Elon Musk's dismantling of critical USAID programs and other foreign assistance threaten millions and must be immediately restored. Trump's funding cuts to one HIV prevention program alone have already caused <a href="https://pepfar.impactcounter.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">an estimated 65,000 deaths and counting</a> and undermine American global leadership on human rights and basic morality. American humanitarian programs literally save lives and create opportunities for millions of people worldwide.&nbsp;My foreign policy centers people, not the governments or groups claiming to represent them. In that spirit, I believe in holding our allies accountable, even when it's uncomfortable or inconvenient. For too long, the United States has let allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia commit egregious acts with American taxpayer-funded weapons. I am a proud Palestinian-American, but people of all backgrounds and ethnicities should be disturbed by our government's complicity in Israel's 58-year-long illegal occupation of the West Bank and the ongoing attacks on Gaza, which have killed tens of thousands of civilians, including infants and children. I have called and continue to call for a comprehensive bilateral ceasefire between Israel and Hamas which results in the restoration of humanitarian aid to Gaza, the release of hostages held in Gaza, and a total Israeli military withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. We must additionally work with our allies to set the stage for lasting peace and reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians.In a time of global uncertainty, we must also strengthen our relationships with allies closer to home, reaffirming our friendly relations with our closest neighbors. Donald Trump's threats to annex or invade Canada are completely unacceptable and threaten the rules-based order that American diplomats and elected leaders should be promoting. Likewise, buying Greenland, annexing the Panama Canal, and violating any state’s sovereignty must be completely off the table.

Humane Foreign Policy

Since the earliest days of Judaism, antisemitism has unfortunately proven to be a constant presence in the lives of Jews throughout generations. The ancient Persians, Greeks, and Romans all attempted to eradicate the Jewish people from the face of the Earth, followed in succession over centuries by Spanish persecution, pogroms in Russia, routine oppression and erasure of Jews in the Soviet Union, and most devastatingly, the Holocaust across Europe, followed again immediately by the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Jews from Arab countries. In the wake of the Holocaust and the Second World War, many had hoped that the defeat of Nazism by the Allies would bring about a permanent reprieve. In 2026, that hope has largely proven to be in vain for Jews in the United States. Illinois’ Ninth Congressional District is one of the most Jewish districts in the country and Kat takes the needs and concerns of Jewish community members incredibly seriously. At a time when countless Holocaust survivors were searching for a safe haven, this community took them in. Skokie, part of the Ninth District, was once home to thousands of survivors, and is often speculated to have had the most survivors per capita outside of Israel. With this in mind, neo-Nazis attempted to march on Skokie in 1978 and were resoundingly condemned by the community. Skokie is also home to the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Educational Center, an indispensable resource that honors those murdered in the Shoah and takes on the immense responsibility of educating current and future generations about the horrors of the Shoah and the warning signs of authoritarianism, oppression, and genocide. As both a candidate and a Member of Congress, Kat will work closely with the museum to pursue its mission to “Remember the Past, Transform the Future.” Last year, Jews comprised roughly 2.4% of the American population, and yet found themselves the victim of the vast majority of religion-based hate crimes. Anti-Jewish rhetoric has spiked both online and in the real world, and politicians in the United States and abroad frequently make use of antisemitism for both entertainment and political purposes. While the rhetoric is disturbing in and of itself, thought often translates to action, with tragic consequences:<ul><li>In June 2025, an assailant tossed an incendiary device at a crowd of Jewish demonstrators assembled in Boulder, Colorado, to call for the release of hostages held by Hamas, with one fatality and fifteen injuries.</li><li>In April 2025, an arsonist set fire to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with his family sleeping inside. Though the Governor and his family were unharmed, the incident highlighted vulnerabilities for even high-ranking Jewish officials.</li><li>In January 2022, a gunman stormed the Congregation Beth Israel synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, taking numerous hostages, and ultimately killing one before the authorities were able to step in.</li><li>In December 2019, a knife-wielding intruder broke into the home of a Monsey, New York Hasidic Rabbi during Hanukkah and stabbed five people, killing one.</li><li>In December 2019, two assailants opened fire at a kosher grocery store in Jersey City, New Jersey, killing seven and wounding three.</li><li>In October 2018, a gunman entered the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and shot seventeen people, killing eleven. The shooter had extensively posted antisemitic language on a fringe online platform prior to the attack.</li><li>In August of 2017, a large group of far-right attendees at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia chanted “Jews will not replace us.” At the same rally, one of the attendees rammed his vehicle into a crowd of counter-protestors, killing one. </li></ul>This list is but a sample of the many horrific experiences our Jewish siblings have had to endure in America. These attacks, and the rhetoric that inspires them, are nothing new to the Jewish community, but they are increasing in frequency and popularity. Our elected leaders too often either use the Jewish community as a political tool, or ignore it altogether. Either way, Jews in America are fundamentally less safe than they were in years past, and our politicians must take decisive action. Kat’s action list for fighting antisemitism draws on the lived experience of both her Jewish friends, loved ones, staffers, and community members she has been privileged to live and work with over her career and throughout her congressional campaign. Safer Spaces for Jews Online<ul><li>Many antisemitic hate crimes in the real world are inspired by hateful online posts. Social media has become a breeding ground for hateful ideas and violent rhetoric. Building on her experience monitoring domestic extremism and bigotry in online spaces as a journalist and media analyst, Kat will work with social media platforms like Meta, X, YouTube, and others to use the power of Congress to strengthen their anti-bias detection systems and strengthen their terms of use.</li><li>If elected, Kat will call for and work towards the establishment of a bicameral, bipartisan Congressional-Executive Commission on Countering Digital Hatred that will both monitor antisemitism and establish federal cooperative programs that counter violent extremism. This will replace and expand the work of the House Bipartisan Task Force on Antisemitism.</li><li>Kat will work with internet service providers and federal law enforcement units like the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center to help bridge the gap between industry and the government where it comes to flagging and intercepting violent acts before they occur — many developed nations already monitor public Internet traffic for this purpose, and the U.S. is lagging far behind. </li></ul>Safer Spaces for Jews in the Real World<ul><li>Everyone in the United States is afforded the equal right to worship without fear of harm, and Kat believes we have a moral responsibility to make sure that is true for American Jews.</li><li>If elected, Kat will work to strengthen synagogue, yeshiva, and Jewish community center security through Congressionally mandated grants for target hardening, perimeter security, and improved security monitoring systems.</li><li>Kat will work with Jewish leaders in the Illinois’ Ninth District and around the country to make sure their security concerns are not just heard but also met 100% of the time.</li><li>Kat will introduce an American Jewish Security Act in Congress, that will mandate the hiring of Jewish Community Liaisons in all federally-funded state investigative agencies, local police departments, schools, and hospitals located in or around significant Jewish population centers, and will make it explicit federal law for the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and Criminal Division to intervene where discrimination is found. </li></ul>Countering Antisemitic Rhetoric &amp; Ensuring American Jews are Heard<ul><li>Antisemitic rhetoric has reached a level in the United States unseen for generations, and our political environment has not been spared. Common and hateful tropes such as dual-loyalty, the blood libel, and Jewish control of government, the media, and finance are routinely echoed and amplified by some elected leaders and public figures. Kat is firm and clear on this: conflating the actions of the State of Israel with American Jewry is deeply unacceptable, as are any antisemitic tropes and comments. Antisemitism has no place in American politics or anywhere else, and Kat calls it out — and will continue to call it out — no matter the source.</li><li>If elected, Kat will set aside dedicated, recurring, and regular time slots for Jewish community leaders and members to be heard, both in-person in Washington, D.C., in the Ninth District, and virtually. No one should be left out, and where other politicians have failed to include the Jewish community, Kat will step up.</li><li>Kat believes that most hatred is borne of ignorance, and to counter this, will regularly host pluralist community events where interfaith interaction is central — Jews of course included. If more Americans came to appreciate their Jewish neighbors as they are, Kat believes that we can build a strong and united community, one where no one gets left behind. </li></ul>Antisemitism should not be a partisan issue or even an American issue: it is simply a human issue. Kat’s progressive values and lived experience, as well as those of her Jewish staff members, supporters, and constituents, lay out a concrete roadmap for addressing antisemitism in the United States. It takes courage to do the politically inconvenient thing, but Kat believes that no American is free until we all are — free from fear that they are in danger simply for existing or exercising basic Constitutional rights. Jewish Americans deserve more from Congress and, if elected, Kat will stand up and do the right thing, and she will not rest until Jews can practice their faith, maintain their traditions, and live in peace without fear of any repercussions.
